Turmeric comes from the Curcuma longa plant, which grows in India and other Southeast Asian countries. The dried root of the Curcuma longa plant is ground into the distinctive yellow turmeric powder. There are several chemical compounds found in turmeric, known as curcuminoids. The active substance in turmeric is curcumin. Curcumin is what makes turmeric a “functional food,” defined by the Mayo Clinic as “foods that have a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition.” It is a bright yellow-orange spice commonly used in curries and sauces. The spice has been used for its medicinal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties for thousands of years. Turmeric tea is one popular form of consuming turmeric. It has a unique but subtle flavor. There are three main phytochemicals in the curcuminoid family that are responsible for turmeric's health benefits: diferuloylmethane (or curcumin, the primary curcuminoid responsible for turmeric’s vibrant yellowish color), demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. In addition to these three chemicals, turmerone is a potent volatile oil found in the root.
